Drugmaker Proscar said on Wednesday it will begin selling a generic version of its drug used to treat male pattern baldness, which affects around 1.2 million men.
The generic version of Proscar, which is sold under the brand name Proscar, has been available in Europe since July 2014. The original drug was approved in the U. S. in 2003 and has been available in the U. since 2006.
While the U. Food and Drug Administration's approval of Proscar follows an approval process that started in 2003, the drugmaker is still reviewing the regulatory process.
"We're in the early stages of evaluating our current regulatory process and we're in the process of going through the regulatory process," said Les Funtleyder, Proscar's U. sales manager. "There's a lot of information out there that could change what we're doing."
Proscar's patent on Proscar has expired, but the U. patent on the drug expired in June 2014. The drug is marketed under the name Proscar. A generic version of Proscar is expected in late-2019. The generic version of Proscar is sold under the brand name Proscar and is the same drug as Proscar.
The generic version of Proscar is known as 5 mg finasteride and is manufactured by Sun Pharmaceutical Industries and is sold under the name Proscar. The generic version of Proscar is known as 5 mg dutasteride and is manufactured by Merck & Co.
The company said it has not received any official U. sales representative's notice or regulatory agency's notice. However, a Sun spokesman said the company has "agreed and is in the early stages of evaluating our current regulatory process."

The company said its current review of the FDA's regulatory process will continue to evaluate the drug and "be consistent with our expectations that this is an effective treatment for male pattern baldness."
Proscar, which is marketed by Merck, is the only drugmaker to have applied to the FDA twice since it was approved in 2003 for the treatment of male pattern baldness.
Proscar is the only company to have taken a similar application to the FDA.
In June 2014, the FDA approved Proscar for the treatment of male pattern baldness.
